This short lived band existed only between May of 1987 and May of 1989, but is generally credited as creating the ska.punk hardcore sound that would later be smoothed out and popularized by bands like Rancid (formed by members of Operation Ivy), Sublime, Green Day, Goldfinger, and Less Than Jake. Still reading you smug hipsters?

The band’s short lived history was chronicled in the lyrics of the Rancid song “Journey to the End of the East Bay

“Started in ‘87, Ended in ‘89, Got a garage or an amp, we’ll play anytime. It was just the four of us, Yeah man the core of us, Too much attention unavoidably destroyed us. Four kids on tour, 3,000 miles, in a four door car, not knowing what was going on. We got a million years, of tourin’ out like this, Hell no, no premonition could have seen this. ”

Which roughly translated to: After constant touring and building a strong following EMI offered them a major-label deal and they freaked. Unsure of how to react to the prospect of success, because ..you know..they were punks, man.– the band chose to break up rather than compromise their integrity…you know, because major label albums are for sell outs! If not for that silly misguided thought process we could be @ BestBuy, in our doc martens, buying up copies of Rockband: Operation Ivy right now!

Highlights: ” Badtown,” “Knowledge,” “Take Warning,”" The Crowd”

A NIGHT IN PHOTOS – SEPT. 16, 2009

This is a “night in photos” column with a short write-up tagged to it.

Wednesday night, September 16th, I headed out to Spaceland and then to El Cid. At Spaceland, Diane Birch was in town. You may recall that I wrote a column about her awhile back (click here for that column). My regret about that column was not having any photos to share with you from that night. Therefore, the inspiration for this photo column that was discussed with my TRAffIK editor/friend. After Birch’s set, I headed over to El Cid where I caught two bands: New Fidelity and New Maximum Donkey. Yes, two bands with the word “New” in it. I believe both of these bands were previously mentioned/featured on inTraffik.com. Hope you all enjoy the photos (click on images to enlarge). (more…)

Cut and Reel, besides bringing you their recommendations (REEL!) and non-recommendations (CUT!) for what to see in the theaters will also bring you their picks for older flicks that are worth staying home to watch, like this week’s Reel Classic, A Bronx Tale.

Directed by: Robert De Niro

Written by: Chazz Palminteri

He’s wrong. It don’t take much strength to pull a trigger. But try and get up every morning, day after day, and work for a living. Let’s see him try that. Then we’ll see who the real tough is. The working man’s the tough guy. Your father’s the tough guy.

Based on Chazz Palminteri’s real-life experiences of growing up in the Bronx, A Bronx Tale is an incredibly humbling coming-of-age story in which the lines are blurred between good versus evil and right versus wrong. Robert De Niro co-stars in his directorial debut as Lorenzo Anello, a proud blue-collar man who is rich with integrity and teaches these virtues to his son by being a living example. His young son, Calogero, admires his father, but can’t shake his fascination with neighborhood gangster Sonny LoSpecchio. Much against his father’s will, Calogero, or ‘C,’ is taken under Sonny’s wing after C is the witness of murder and doesn’t rat on Sonny. Sonny, played by writer Chazz Palminteri, teaches C more than how to survive on the streets. He gives C an education on women, acceptance, and most notably, the powerful difference between respect and fear. (more…)

MAKE A LIST BABY!!! Traveling Time, The Salton Sea!

Towards the bottom of my list (which was written in no particular order), was the idea to travel to someplace I’d never been. It turns out there are tons of places within California that I have yet to visit. So last week I made an executive decision and stated that travel time was upon us! I looked at my list and thought its time to get in my car and do some driving and the perfect place to start was The Salton Sea.

So the plan started with enlisting my children as my travel partners. I want them to have the same need for exploration that I have and the best way to teach them this is to shove them in a car for a couple of hours and make them drive with me! The good news was that they wanted an adventure as well so it didn’t take too much twisting of arms or bribing to get them to join me. Next I mentioned the trip to my fabulous part-time photographer girl-friend hoping she would take the bait – and she did as well. Neither of us had been to The Salton Sea before. An adventure was now in the making. We decided that come that Sunday we would all be off in my little Honda. This was the extent of our planning: “Hey, be at my house on Sunday morning at 9a.m and bring a cooler” …”Sounds good”.

Sunday morning rolled around, Ms. Ford arrived and it was time to load up the car. (more…)
