Today, Fashion Girl Heather tackles the touchy subject of the Men’s “Skinny” Denim trend with The Denim Guy Johnny Pinto!
_________________________________________________________________________________
Well ladies and gents, here we are in 2011 and fashion is as diverse and exciting as ever for both men and women. Men seem to be getting more involved in their look these days, which is great to see–and denim is as strong as ever.
That brings to mind a question… are Skinny Jeans here to stay?
This is going to be divided into two parts because as we all know, fashion trends for men are very different than those for women.
First, let’s talk about MEN.
When looking into trends in denim, the first person who comes to mind is my friend Johnny, a.k.a THE DENIM GUY (check out his site for everything from trend updates to denim reviews at: http://thedenimguy.com/.)
________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
He is a denim expert and sees all the brands before the season starts. He knows what’s trending and what’s coming in upcoming seasons.
Johnny and I discussed “SKINNY JEANS FOR MEN” and this is what was covered:
(FGH = Fashion Girl Heather; TDG = the Denim Guy)
FGH: Fashion is ever changing but some trends seem to hang on longer than others. Do you think skinny jeans for men are here to stay?
TDG: Fashion is ever changing, trends come and go. Some longer than others. So when you ask if I think the “Skinny” for men is staying, I say YES, but we have to understand a few things….. Skinny is in, but men get scared with the word “skinny.” So we tend to call them slim fits.
Skinny/Slim fit denim will stay in trend, but not in the way we think of a 16-year old wearing them. For that extreme skinny look you see some high school kids in, they are literally going into stores and buying girls denim or wearing their sister’s denim. While they are setting the trend, fashion brands are taking that as inspiration and creating something for everyone else to wear, for your average fashionable guy.
We will see 3 new “slims” for men. “Straight Slim,” “Relaxed Slim,” and “Slouchy Skinny/Slim.” All pretty much have more room in the butt and thigh (depending on the guy’s body type), but all will get tighter in the knee and taper at the bottom. Guys want to be on trend but also be comfortable.
FGH: For a guy that wants to be fashionable, but maybe doesn’t feel comfortable in skinny jeans, what would you recommend?
TDG: Well it all depends on what the guy is wearing right now… (more…)

Favorite Stores: Bergdorf Goodman, Maxfield, Urban Outfitters
Favorite Fashionable Celebrities: Lady Gaga, Charlotte Kemp Muhl, Pixie Geldof
BB’s Picks and Revisits:
Favorite Fashion Designer: Vivienne Westwood revolutionized fashion in so many ways. She started before the punk rock scene even hit and continues to wow her fans with adventurous flair. Before rock and roll was even played on the radio, Westwood was a couple steps ahead in introducing pieces that would become the only look for punk rock bands like The Sex Pistols and New York Dolls.
Favorite Fashion Era: 60’s – Jackie O and Edie Sedgwick were big fashion icons during this era. They set the fashion standards for both of the social groups they were apart of.
Last Seen Wearing: Black blazer with any old t-shirt or a floral print dress. Report Gladiator Sandals for my sunny days and my flat Report Signature Harper Over-the-Knee Black Leather Boots. I live in these boots by the way!
Five Items I Never Leave Home Without: Blackberry (yes I am addicted), my yoga bag, traveling mug for my morning coffee, pocket calendar.
Favorite Beauty Products: Nivea Sun-kissed Firming Lotion, AVEDA anything (I love the smell of Aveda products, Bra Converter (this always saves me when I wear racerback tanks/dresses), Vincent Longo Bronzer, Juicy Tubes Gloss and Nenette Lepore Perfume…that’s been my favorite scent for years!
Favorite Stores: www.ShopRobertson.com and Urban Outfitters
Favorite Celebrities: Gwyneth Paltrow, Edie Sedgwick, Joaquin Phoenix, and Andy Warhol.
Stay tuned for more from BB and Heather the TRAffIK Fashion Girls.

What I’m Reading Right Now…The Fashion Girls
BB’a Pick:
“Diane Arbus: A Biography“ by Patricia Bosworth
Arbus is my all time favorite photographer. After seeing the film “Fur” with Nicole Kidman playing the infamous Arbus, I had to know more about her. Her life is interesting and the tone she set for her subject matters in the 60’s was risqué and beyond unique. She turned from doing fashion photography to finally tapping into her personal creativeness by doing personal portraits of subjects living in unusual lifestyles. What I love so much about her is that she brought to light the beauty of indivisuals living at the edge of society –- transexuals, homosexuals showing affection in public, strippers getting ready for work, or an abnormally tall man with his average size family. One of the best gifts I ever received was Arbus’ beautiful and interesting table top book, “Revelations.”
Heather’s Pick:
“ The Commoner” by John Burnham Schwartz.
This is a beautifully written story about a young woman who marries into the Royal Family in post-WWII Japan.
“Schwartz has written about Japan before — in the novel “Bicycle Days,” based on a summer he spent there as a young man in the mid-1980s — and he has established himself as a master of mood in more recent fiction, particularly his novel “Reservation Road,” a tale of death and loss that, like “The Commoner,” is infused with a terrible sadness. ” — Lesley Downer, The New York Times
