Two things happened this month. The first had to do with Ammunition Radio on IsGoodRadio.com. I, along with my guest co-host for January Ms. Amanda Jones (and our special guests Mista John Montgomery and Sarah Longueieul) decided to revisit the music that we grew up with. Recalling the stories associated with different bands and songs and at what points we were in our lives was fun. The second thing which you won’t really see reflected in this list since I figured you were probably sick of those artists and songs since most are getting pretty frequent airplay, was that I decided to finally listen to most of the albums that were released in 2009 in their entirety, or as much of their entirety as I could tolerate (from bands including Atlas Sound, Beach House, Brakes, Camera Obscura, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Slow Club, Wilco, We Were Promised Jet Packs, The French Semester, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, The Dodos, Fanfarlo, Girls, Happy Hollows, etc. etc.).
Once again, I listened to way too much music to list, but here’s some of what I fell asleep to and some songs that there was no way I was going to fall asleep to.
Ok, this all started with me dog-sitting for Lady Di’s new adorable puppy. I got home kind of late from the Pu$$y Cow double cd release party/show (congratulations guys!) and found the doggy watching a horror movie (True story. No wonder the puppy ate that lamp shade earlier…although I’m still convinced the puppy thought the lamp was Lady GaGa, and was trying to rid the world of it/her/him). So, I took the puppy out to do her business (btw if any of you live near Lady Di and you were the guy tapping on your window from inside your apartment trying to get my attention, here’s some advice: don’t do that to girls at 1 or 2 am, it’s a little scary…UNLESS there’s a really good reason like an axe murderer is standing behind her and she has no clue.). Alright, so less about the puppy and more about Jason London, err uhmm I mean The Cranberries…but first Jason London, so when we got back inside I alternated watching the Chris Isaak hour and one of those made for TV movies from the 90’s starring Shannon Doherty and Jason London who are in a band together and a crazy girl tries to become Shannon Doherty, I think it was called Friends ‘Til the End (but I’m not going to look it up). I’ve had a crush on Jason London since I was little from The Man in the Moon and Dazed and Confused movies (funny enough, even though they are twin brothers I never had a crush on Jeremy London, despite the fact that he was in Mallrats one of my favorite movies). Ok, ok back to The Cranberries, well this song by The Cranberries played during the opening scenes of that Friends ‘Til The End movie and I hadn’t heard it in so long, so the next day I had to pull out my Cranberries cd’s to revisit songs like “Zombie,” “Linger,” “Salvation,” and “Dreams.” When I was young I imagined Dolores O’Riordan must have been really cool.
I just saw this local LA band last week for the first time when they shared the stage with our friend’s bands (The Shakers and Underwater City People). I found them to be a nice change of pace. It took me forever to remember the name of the band, but this song stayed in my head. It actually reminded me of some of the bands from the early 90’s. If you have a chance to catch them, you should.
I wrote the title for this and it made me giggle silently to myself. The problem with the title is that I’m a 33 year old, with three kids and am completely responsible with a home under my belt to prove it. I throw dinner parties, birthday parties, cook for all of my friends and I can even make a killer Martini. The issue is that I’m 33 years old and still think like I’m 17 about a lot of silly things. I’ll give you a few examples to explain, the most recent happening a few weeks ago.
The Pixies were in town. This is one of, if not my absolute favorite bands. Ok, it’s neck and neck with The Pixies, The Clash, Minor Threat and Black Flag – but you get the idea. Now the last few times The Pixies have been in town one of two things occurred. I got so excited that I drank too much and ended up far more drunk than I should have been and had to be babysat all night by an unhappy boyfriend and or I would get so excited that would literally not be able to stop jumping around and or would get annoyed with the people around me because I couldn’t figure out for the life of me why they were all standing there staring at the most amazing band and NOT jumping around?
So The Pixies announced their Doolittle Tour and then I found out it was at The Hollywood Palladium. The HOLLYWOOD FUCKING PALLADIUM – where I spent almost every month, in my youth, watching some of the most amazing shows of all time (for the 90’s that is). I was thrilled and very much beginning to revert to the 17 year old. I was listening to Doolittle over and over again. Counting down the days till the show! However, I was also promising myself that I wouldn’t drink too much so I could really enjoy the show. I wore a cute skirt, put on some pretty make-up, and showed up on time with a friend that I had convinced needed to see this band with me. Off we went. I had a cocktail before I left the house and thought – Perfect – this is going swimmingly! Then I show up at the show and someone I know hands me a water bottle and says, “Here drink this quick” (It didn’t have water in it – by the way). So I do. Now, I am entering The Palladium and ever more excited!!! Woo-Hoo – The Pixies!!!! Then I think I should grab a beer because I am not leaving the show for anything!!! (more…)

So every month we TRAffIK peeps will pick a new FASHIONISTA to feature. We might see ya out at one our favorite LA spots, at the super market, or just walkin’ down the street, and if we take notice of you stopping TRAffik with your “oh-so-rad” threads and sense of fashion then we’ll want to take that and throw you up on our site and learn more about you through a Q&A.
On these streets, we know there are all walks of life on display and we want share what you got goin’ on with all the other Angelinos who are in TRAffIK.
This month’s FASHIONISTA is San Francisco Native Heather Ellis. In this Q & A she gives us a brief overview on her sense of style, days as a punk-rocker, favorite designers, and where fashion stands today.
TRAffIK: Where are you from originally? Heather Ellis: I am originally from SF, I moved to LA in 1999 to work in the music industry.
TRAffIK: What is your occupation? Heather Ellis:I am a sales agent for a fashion showroom and a stylist.
TRAffIK: How would you describe your personal style? Heather Ellis:My personal style is a mix of everything I love really, bits and pieces of my favorite fashion. I love Scandinavian fashion, especially Danish…and there’s always a little 80’s in there. Some people think the 80’s was a bad time in fashion but I think it was a very creative time in general, in fashion, music and art. Actually I think much of the fashion from the 80’s, especially street fashion, paved the way for so much of what we see today.
