Note from the Editor: This year for L.A.’s Fashion Weekend (brought to us by The Gallery L.A.), we decided to bring one of our staffers who had never been to a fashion show ever, so that they could bring you coverage through a pair of “fresh eyes” since we figured details would be captured by this first-timer that some of us who attend events such as these with more frequency forget to notice. The following is her take on what we previously brought you coverage on both Tuesday and Wednesday. -S.C.
Young and Reckless in the City – “Out to See: L.A.’s Fashion Weekend 2011 at Sunset/Gower Studios”
I can navigate my way through many parts of this glorious city of Los Angeles – you name it, I’ve probably been there and/or seen it.
I’m a native Angeleno and unless you want to be bored, often the idea is to get out and see as much as possible. So when it was brought to my attention that L.A. Fashion Week was happening and I could possibly be part of the TRAffik team to cover some of it – I jumped at the chance. I’ve never been to a Fashion show in Los Angeles or anywhere else for that matter. It didn’t dawn on me that I might be out of my element. I instead thought “pretty dresses” and “I get to dress up” — I’m in!
I grabbed a frock, tried to be pretty and glamorous for the evening and charged out to Sunset Gower Studios with Siria Contreras (the TRAffik creator/editor), our photographer, and Siria’s friend Michelle Marini (owner of The Woods in Hollywood and The Falls in Downtown L.A.). (more…)

With the LA Fashion Week approaching, here’s a shortcut to what not to miss.
LA Fashion week officially kicks off this Friday March 11th with a “multi-agenda” atmosphere once again. There will be independent collections and group shows spread over a week and a half of A/W 2011 previews all over the city.
CONCEPT launches the “official” week on
Friday March 11th with
Henry Duarte and
Roark Collective. Duarte’s label was made most famous by dressing rock and roll icons like Sheryl Crow, Lenny Kravitz and Steven Tyler, we can’t wait to see how the collection has evolved. If you have never heard of
Roark, make it a priority now.
I was lucky enough to have already worked with the label placing pre-sampled pieces sourced from leather in Paris on some of our clients. Designer Andrew Steiger has masterminded an amazing collection!
Project Ethos, which is one of the few open to events to the public kicks of
Saturday March 12th combining a live performance by indie band
Robotanists, a new art instillation featuring work by 7 artists and runway presentations all night at the Avalon Hollywood.
On Sunday March 13th don’t miss the
CONCEPT presentation of
SkinGraft one of the most famous LA fashion labels that puts us on the map as being able to do “couture” not just lifestyle branding.

Skip to Wednesday March 16th for a few not to be missed shows, located at
Vibiana for
Gypsy 05 and
Future Heretics, two highly successful clothing brands that are definite trendsetters.
Thursday March 17th, a special tribute to Alexander McQueen marking a year after his untimely death that shocked the global fashion community.
On Friday March 18th highlighting front runner
Sue Wong will privately unveil her collection at an estate in Hollywood. The event theme “
Divine Decadence.”
And in finale the
Sunset Gower Studios shows both Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th, brought to you by
Gallery LA during their “
L.A. Fashion Weekend“ This event hosts one of the best runway set-ups in town and stands as an epicenter during L.A.’s Fashion Week presenting shows from brands like
Adiktion and
Civil Society.
Most shows and events are trade only, but still open for rsvp. Others are ticket based events, but worth the investment!
See you in the front row!

LIFE IN TRAFFIK:
by Siria Contreras
This past weekend fashion lines within Los Angeles competed for our time and attention. In particular Saturday night
Unfortunately, I had to make the decision to miss the Elmer Ave secret fashion show downtown (you can read about it here), but was able to make it to the Division E, Raw-7, Tavik Swimwear, and Urban Republic show for a little while before grudgingly having to leave to attend another event I had previously committed to. These lines were all part of the The Gallery LA produced Los Angeles Fashion Weekend, where they showed off their Spring and Summer 2010 Collections
Although there are those that are quick to write off the LA Fashion Scene, at times forgetting how much really goes on daily in the busy lives of those who keep this industry alive, it was nice to see that all of those present did not share that attitude. They all filled the courtyard playing catch up and enjoying drinks from the open bar sponsored by Skybar (hosted by Marani Vodka, Asahi Beer, 1921 Tequila, Steaz Organic Energy Drinks, Smart Water and IZZE soda) while waiting for the fashion show to get underway.
Some of the Brand Equity Showroom team were seen sporting their Division E designer client’s designs (as well as Signature Collection footwear from Sponsor Report Shoes), giving a sneak preview of what was to come later during the actual show.
A noticeable and welcome change from the typical fashion show scene at the Sunset Gower Studios was that a lot of the general public and sceney fashionista mainstays were excluded, opting for a guestlist comprised of mainly buyers, designers, agents, and media.
The Gallery LA owner/producer Mikey Koffman had this to say, “People talk incessantly about the recession and the need to cut back, but the reality is that now, more than ever, local designers need to get involved to prove their worth to buyers, media and consumers across the world.”
This statement definitely set the tone for the evening, as this show had an underlying theme of “getting down to business.”
Here are a few shots from the show (I apologize for the poor quality, you can find additional much better photos here). Click on Images to enlarge. Hair by Elle Hoppenstedt and the Aveda Planet Salon team.
