Lucky for us the L.A. based Brand Equity Showroom Fashion Agent Brandy Bustamante (“BB”) and NYC  based Proper Fools Showroom Fashion Agent Heather Ellis are here to help with Real Fashion for Real People!

Today, Fashion Girl Heather tackles the touchy subject of the Men’s “Skinny” Denim trend with The Denim Guy Johnny Pinto!

_________________________________________________________________________________

Well ladies and gents, here we are in 2011 and fashion is as diverse and exciting as ever for both men and women. Men seem to be getting more involved in their look these days, which is great to see–and denim is as strong as ever.

That brings to mind a question… are Skinny Jeans here to stay?

This is going to be divided into two parts because as we all know, fashion trends for men are very different than those for women.

First, let’s talk about MEN.

When looking into trends in denim, the first person who comes to mind is my friend Johnny, a.k.a THE DENIM GUY (check out his site for everything from trend updates to denim reviews at: http://thedenimguy.com/.)

________________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________________

He is a denim expert and sees all the brands before the season starts.  He knows what’s trending and what’s coming in upcoming seasons.

Johnny and I discussed “SKINNY JEANS FOR MEN” and this is what was covered:

(FGH = Fashion Girl Heather; TDG = the Denim Guy)

FGH: Fashion is ever changing but some trends seem to hang on longer than others. Do you think skinny jeans for men are here to stay?

TDG: Fashion is ever changing, trends come and go.  Some longer than others. So when you ask if I think the “Skinny” for men is staying, I say YES, but we have to understand a few things….. Skinny is in, but men get scared with the word “skinny.”  So we tend to call them slim fits.

Skinny/Slim fit denim will stay in trend, but not in the way we think of a 16-year old wearing them. For that extreme skinny look you see some high school kids in, they are literally going into stores and buying girls denim or wearing their sister’s denim. While they are setting the trend, fashion brands are taking that as inspiration and creating something for everyone else to wear, for your average fashionable guy.

We will see 3 new “slims” for men. “Straight Slim,” “Relaxed Slim,” and “Slouchy Skinny/Slim.” All pretty much have more room in the butt and thigh (depending on the guy’s body type), but all will get tighter in the knee and taper at the bottom. Guys want to be on trend but also be comfortable.

FGH: For a guy that wants to be fashionable, but maybe doesn’t feel comfortable in skinny jeans, what would you recommend?

TDG: Well it all depends on what the guy is wearing right now… (more…)

Heathers Picks and Revisits:
Favorite Fashion Designers: Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood
Favorite Era(s) for Fashion: 30’s and 40’s, the 60’s, and of course the 80’s (can’t choose just one!)
Last Seen Wearing: Democracy of Nevermind dress, shiny leggings and Moschino Cheap and Chic Boots
5 Items I Never Leave Home Without: Blackberry, iPod 160GB, Kate Spade “Big Apple Neda” wallet (holds everything!), Cocoa Butter lip balm by Cococare, and my makeup bag (see below!)
Favorite Beauty Products: Lancome Maquicomplet Concealer, Fresh Freshface Blush Powder, Sephora Eyeshadow Colorful Duo No. 9, L’oreal Voluminous Mascara in black, and Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in black.
Favorite Stores: Bergdorf Goodman, Maxfield, Urban Outfitters
Favorite Fashionable Celebrities: Lady Gaga, Charlotte Kemp Muhl, Pixie Geldof

BB’s Picks and Revisits:
Favorite Fashion Designer: Vivienne Westwood revolutionized fashion in so many ways. She started before the punk rock scene even hit and continues to wow her fans with adventurous flair. Before rock and roll was even played on the radio, Westwood was a couple steps ahead in introducing pieces that would become the only look for punk rock bands like The Sex Pistols and New York Dolls.
Favorite Fashion Era: 60’s – Jackie O and Edie Sedgwick were big fashion icons during this era. They set the fashion standards for both of the social groups they were apart of.
Last Seen Wearing: Black blazer with any old t-shirt or a floral print dress. Report Gladiator Sandals for my sunny days and my flat Report Signature Harper Over-the-Knee Black Leather Boots. I live in these boots by the way!
Five Items I Never Leave Home Without: Blackberry (yes I am addicted), my yoga bag, traveling mug for my morning coffee, pocket calendar.
Favorite Beauty Products: Nivea Sun-kissed Firming Lotion, AVEDA anything (I love the smell of Aveda products, Bra Converter (this always saves me when I wear racerback tanks/dresses), Vincent Longo Bronzer, Juicy Tubes Gloss and Nenette Lepore Perfume…that’s been my favorite scent for years!
Favorite Stores: www.ShopRobertson.com and Urban Outfitters
Favorite Celebrities: Gwyneth Paltrow, Edie Sedgwick, Joaquin Phoenix, and Andy Warhol.

What I’m Reading Right Now…The Fashion Girls

BB’a Pick:

Diane Arbus: A Biography  by Patricia Bosworth

arbusArbus is my all time favorite photographer. After seeing the film “Fur” with Nicole Kidman playing the infamous Arbus, I had to know more about her. Her life is interesting and the tone she set for her subject matters in the 60’s was risqué and beyond unique. She turned from doing fashion photography to finally tapping into her personal creativeness by doing personal portraits of subjects living in unusual lifestyles. What I love so much about her is that she brought to light the beauty of indivisuals living at the edge of society –- transexuals, homosexuals showing affection in public, strippers getting ready for work, or an abnormally tall man with his average size family. One of the best gifts I ever received was Arbus’ beautiful and interesting table top book, “Revelations.”

 Heather’s Pick:

“ The Commoner” by John Burnham Schwartz.

guide_commoner

This is a beautifully written story about a young woman who marries into the Royal Family in post-WWII Japan.

Schwartz has written about Japan before — in the novel “Bicycle Days,” based on a summer he spent there as a young man in the mid-1980s — and he has established himself as a master of mood in more recent fiction, particularly his novel “Reservation Road,” a tale of death and loss that, like “The Commoner,” is infused with a terrible sadness. ” — Lesley Downer, The New York Times

An Introduction: REAL FASHION FOR REAL PEOPLE

laughingbbpleatherLet’s face it.  We could all use a little help in the fashion department, whether it be a total make-over, finding the right styles for our body types, or even just help discovering the latest fashion by the next hot designers. Lucky for us the Brand Equity Showroom Fashion Agents Brandy Bustamante (“BB”) and Heather Ellis are here to help!

We now invite you to learn a little more about both BB and Heather and discover why their motto is: “Fashion is our ART…Make Fashion Your ART.

About BB by BB

Picture3 bbKarl Lagerfeild may be a bit risqué with his opinions of fashion but he was right when he said, “Fashion is about dreams and illusions.” Fashion for me is collages that can be made up from the pages of magazines, artwork, or a scene from an old movie. I didn’t take the traditional path of attending a school geared towards Fashion to get into this industry, but several years ago the doors to this plethora of a career opened unexpectedly placing me in this wonderful world of designers and agents. Growing up, I never would have imagined that life would organically place me in this instrumental role within the Fashion Industry, an industry that I don’t see myself stepping out of for a long while.

There are so many big fashion-related dreams out there and you don’t necessarily need Fashion 101 from a fancy fashion school to make them come true. I am in no way shape or form bashing what a fashion institute offers, rather sharing career advice from one who has and continues to invest time to gain working knowledge and experience in this business of Fashion.

As I continue to piece together my career collage, I will lace you in sharing my experiences. Heather and I will bring you the imaginative and amazing people we may meet, the bright lights of colorful photo shoots we style, designers with innovative ideas, the action of runway shows and most importantly the real life and behind the scenes of a fashion agent – the sales, the grind and the showroom. Our main goal is to not only give career advice but to bring the inside of fashion OUT. We want to share the trends, the beauty secrets and the REAL FASHION WITH REAL PEOPLE. So whether it be a local fashionista we want to acknowledge for being smashing, how to wear a seemingly odd accessory, or just sharing our own beauty picks from our purse – we will be digging up new haute trends and recreating the “how to’s” for the old trends.

About Heather by Heather

Picture4 heThe thing that really inspired me to want to co-create this column with BB is that I have a real desire to help people find themselves, and find freedom, in Fashion. To me it’s like art, it’s simply a matter of personal taste. Sure there are trends, and some aspects of Fashion may not work for every body type– but if you like it, you can make it yours. Fashion is everyone. You just have to know where to look and sometimes, how and when to take some risks.

This idea inspires me more than anything because I love to see people being creative with Fashion. I truly look at Fashion as an art form. Sometimes I paint myself with bright colors and sometimes I feel that black says it all. Either way I’m always expressing myself creatively through fashion– and that’s what BB and I would like to share with you. Sometimes it will be something exciting like a fashion show or a brand new line we just found. Sometimes we might offer advice about how to get the most out of your closet for the next six months while spending very little on new clothes (we know times are tough!). We might blog about a new Fashion School we find….or job opportunities in fashion that require no school at all (they do exist!).

We want to hear from you too– Maybe you know of a new line we haven’t found yet (maybe your own!) – tell us about it! We are constantly on the hunt for REAL FASHION FOR REAL PEOPLE and we are committed to sharing it with YOU!

Stay tuned for more from BB and Heather the TRAffIK Fashion Girls.  Here’s a little of what you can expect from them and from REAL FASHION FOR REAL PEOPLE :

- The Return of the column From our Make-Up Bags to Yours with BB’s and Heather’s (and if time allows her, Siria’s as well) must have Beauty and Style Picks

- Special Features on What to Wear and Where – So you and your boyfriend/girlfriend have different styles?  Maybe his/her look is a little too “rock ‘n’ roll” for that professional event you really wanted to attend.  No worries, BB and Heather will show you how he/she can stay true to their own style while modifying their look to make it a little more event appropriate.
