If the name Laurene Alvarado sounds familiar it may be because you’re recalling the feature we ran on her as one of our featured make-up artists. As great a job as she does in making people beautiful (check out her how-to video here–she is also a talented artist (see her ‘Leatherface’ painting above) and jewelry maker.

What’s In My Make-Up Bag – Featured Make-Up Artist Laurene Alvarado
This month’s featured Make-Up Artist Laurene Alvarado shares some of her favorite products, product lines, and where to shop for them.
TRAffIK: What are some of your favorite staple products that you use?
LAURENE: SMASHBOX PHOTO OP UNDER EYE BRIGHTENER- This is by far one of my favorite products. Not only can it be used under the eyes, but I love using it lightly over the ‘t-zone’ to give the false illusion that light is coming thru the skin.
HiP High Intensity Pigments Jelly Balm by Loreal. It gives off great translucent color and it feels so soft, not sticky on the lips.
TRAffIK: What would your advice be for someone who has never worn make-up but wants to start?
LAURENE: Try a tinted moisturizer. Like ELIZABETH ARDEN SHEER LIGHTS ILLUMINATING TINTED MOISTURIZER SPF 15- I use this product on myself as well as others all the time. It gives just the right amount of coverage without feeling ‘makeupy’. It works great as a foundation alone too.
TRAffIK: What is your going out make-up process (either daily morning getting ready or nighttime)?

FEATURED MAKE-UP ARTIST – LAURENE ALVARADO
Long Beach, CA based Whittier, CA native Laurene Alvarado credits watching Lord of the Rings:Return of the King (in German) while on a trip to Germany in 2003 as the definitive moment when she realized that she would become a make-up artist.
“I’ve always loved movies and watching the behind the scenes of how they were made. The make-up and special fx were always my favorites to watch,” states Alvarado
When asked what she feels makes a great artist Alvarado narrows it down to, “Someone who isn’t afraid of makeup. Too often, people think or learn that there is only one way of doing something, and that stifles their creativity. If you do something and don’t like it, then take it off. It’s just makeup. Don’t be afraid of it.”
It is this mentality paired with her love of experimenting with make-up to create great looks that has had Laurene Alvarado working on some of today’s hottest sets, including recent projects I-Empire (documentary on Angels & Airwaves), and Season One of “90210,” which with it’s success has taken up a lot of her time.
This month
