Siria’s March Soundtrack

This month I listened to a lot more Camera Obscura (seriously, they’ve fit my every mood–I’d be okay with having “Teenager” play in the background to whatever I’m doing on a loop) and a lot of really old country, but aside from that here’s a sampling of the rest of the stuff I listened to:

WHAT I FELL ASLEEP TO:

Morning Benders – “Excuses”
I love this song, and the recording idea behind it. That’s all.

I also love this old song of theirs:

Psychedelic Furs – “The Ghost in You”
I am going to make a statement that is a little out of the character for me, being as I’m not usually so committed to anything. This song may very well be my absolute favorite all time song (EVER!), and if this song is playing in my near vicinity and you change it I will kick you out of my office/car/house with no explanation, I don’t care who you are.
If I could have a song from the Replacements and this song (or even just “Love My Way”) on every single one of my playlists I would be a happy girl. However, surprisingly I don’t believe this ever has made any of my monthly playlists until now?

Radar Bros. – “Stay”
I have a great respect for Mr. Putnam, and was bummed that I would be out of town on the evening of the release of the latest effort by Radar Bros. this past Friday. So, instead I consoled myself by listening to some of the older music that included this track. (more…)

DELTRON 3030 RECOMMENDED: Local Natives – Gorilla Manor

gorillamanor200George, Washington’s Sasquatch’s lineup was announced today and it is chock full of goodness. They’re boosting a pretty impressive lineup this year which includes the recently reunited Pavement, Massive Attack, My Morning Jacket, Ween, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Broken Social Scene, and Band of Horses. Along with those “big” bands tons of artists mentioned here in the past will also be descending on the most beautiful location not named Red Rocks to host a concert – The XX, Phantogram, Passion Pit, Neon Indian, The Middle East and today’s buzzed about band: Local Natives. The Sasquatch announcement coincidentally comes on the same day that Local Natives (who happen to be local natives of Silverlake: yep they had a month long  free Mondays residency @ Spaceland last August) release their debut CD, Gorilla Manor- a great CD that is full of soaring voices. Three voices to be exact. No one ever seems to be in charge, vocally speaking. Instead, to great effect, they let the three part harmonies wash over the music and create a different sound. This approach might not work for most bands (please keep your Grizzly Bear comparisons to yourself. Thanks) but it works here for the Local Natives. In case you’re not sold on checking them out I should also mention that they cover the Talking Heads song “Warning Sign“. I’m a sucker for covers and I’m a whore for the Talking Heads…so I became an instant fan.
Yep, I’m an easy mark.

Highlights: “Airplane,” “Sun Hands,” “Warning Sign,” “Who Knows Who Cares”

For those of you who don’t feel like trekking up to George, Washington you can catch the Local Natives and their small font brethren @ SXSW, Coachella, or Bonaroo.

New Maximum Donkey Two Ways

I’ve decided to try something a bit different this week. I’m going to write an overview of the New Maximum Donkey show I saw at the Scene last Friday (two Fridays ago, by the time you read this). But as an experiment, I’m going to do it two different ways: first the way I’d normally write something, and second in the manner of a “regular” rock writer/blogger. Who knows? Maybe the way they write things is just more effective at conveying this sort of thing, so I’m willing to try it out. Here goes: (more…)
