JUKEBOX IN MY MIND: MAC DUNLOP’S JUKEBOX PICKS (PART I)

Our Guest Dj Mac Dunlop (who you may know from L.A. Band The Letter Openers) took over the intraffikradio studios recently to bring us his music picks –songs that he feels every jukebox should have in its repertoire.

During Mac’s set you’ll learn:

- What song belongs in Boston jukeboxes (especially near Fenway Park)

-         What to play when it’s someone’s birthday in a bar

-         What song should play as you’re entering a bar

-         What song should play as you’re exiting a bar

-         Where his favorite jukebox in Hollywood is located!

SIRIA’S SEPTEMBER PLAYLIST

This is the last time I’ll say this. I’m so glad Summer is over.

 Ok, I’m done, I promise.

Well, maybe just once more…

YAY!!!!!! Summer is over!!!!!!

Ok, now I’m really done. Really. Pinky swear. All done.

I’m not sure if Fall will be any better, as when I went to check my e-mail inbox I had 666 unread emails (yeah I know, and this email account isn’t even the account that gets spammed, newsletters, nor most of the Facebook/Myspace alerts).

On a brighter note, here is some wisdom that was subliminally imparted upon me this morning via a song playing on KCRW that I thought I’d enlighten you with (I don’t know the song name and won’t look it up, as I actually didn’t really enjoy the song all that much), “the road doesn’t move, you’re the one that moves.” All thanks to Jason Bentley and his efforts in making my morning eclectic.

Alright, September’s 2:05pm list…here we go.

The Who  – ” So Sad About Us”

I actually can’t decide if I like this original or The Jam’s version better. I think I’m going to go listen to this song as soon as I’m done posting this.

Also, have you ever seen The Who cover “Heatwave”? This song is one of my favorites for bands to cover. The New Fidelity still do the best live cover of this as far as local bands go.

All IV-I, I-IV All

It’s time for a lesson in music theory. Don’t worry, we’ll start slow. Today we’ll be discussing the plagal cadence in rock and roll.

A plagal cadence is just a cadence from the IV (subdominant) chord to the I (tonic) chord. It’s my favorite kind of cadence, and it’s probably best known as the “amen” at the end of every Anglican hymn. If you have a guitar or a piano lying around, you can make your own plagal cadence at home. First, play a D major chord. That’s your tonic. Then play a G major chord—the subdominant chord in D major. Now play a D major chord again. Doesn’t that feel good?  Ohhhh yeeeaaah, that’s the raw groin-tingling power of the I and IV chords.

Here’s a sampling of some of my favorite songs that rely heavily on the I and IV chords. There’s no hierarchy to this list, and my point is mainly to illustrate how many diverse things different bands can do with the same two chords. If you don’t have all these albums, most of these songs are youtube- or myspace-able. Or I guess you could just go out and buy some goddamn CDs.
